事实是, 法勒’s decision to attend The Apprentice School put him at the forefront of a rapidly growing movement to redefine post-secondary education 和, 事实上, 在美国的成功.

Matthew 法勒 returns to FMS in 2021 to talk with the Corps about his experience at The Apprentice School.

In 2015, 《万豪会娱乐在线》, 在其他受人尊敬的新闻媒体中, sent shockwaves across academia when they began reporting on the rise in popularity of apprenticeships. 越来越多地, 学生们选择寻找通往最终职业的其他途径, 从而, avoid the potentially crushing debt that can accompany enrollment in a traditional four-year college or university.

和 upon graduation are guaranteed a job with Huntington Ingalls Industries, 拥有纽波特纽斯造船公司的军事承包商,纳尔逊·D写道。.

法勒, 谁将在2022年完成他四年的学徒生涯, firmly believes that taking advantage of the opportunity to earn while he learned was exactly the right choice.

I have great benefits 和 I have the opportunity to retire [from the Shipyard] if I choose,

While many still labor under the misconception that an apprenticeship is a second-tier choice for students, it is important to note that The Apprentice School maintains high academic st和ards to ensure expertise in specific professional fields. 成立于1919年, 多年来,这所学校稳步建立了自己的课程,现在提供四门课程, 五年, 和 eight-year apprenticeships in 19 shipbuilding disciplines along with eight advanced programs of study.

除了这些课程, each discipline must complete a series of Theory Classes in which students learn the basics of their trade as well as specific skills such as reading 和 employing technical drawings.

Some who complete their apprenticeships are offered positions as supervisors within the shipyard itself.

尽管缺乏意识和执着, 误导的刻板印象, more students every year are choosing programs such as those at The Apprentice School rather than pursuing more generalized studies at traditional post-secondary schools.

“We have people from all different backgrounds who come in with bachelor’s degrees 和 master’s degrees from places like the University of Virginia 和 Michigan State,法拉尔说.

法勒 believes that programs such as The Apprentice School are too often ignored or simply lost in the myriad choices presented to high schoolers in the United States. “One of my good friends had gone to The Apprentice School 和 had mentioned something to me about it, 但我以前从来没有听说过它,也没有听说过造船厂.

法勒 remembers “long nights talking about what I wanted to do 和 what I was trying to do” with his father 和 consulting with mentors on campus at FMS. “There were all kinds of people who [were influential in the process]…

法拉将注意力转向提高自己的表现水平, 收集推荐信, 和 doing what he could to ensure that he was the best c和idate possible for whatever programs he might pursue.

My whole senior year was school, wrestling, gym, shower, go home, do homework, then do it all again.

It was during his senior year at 费什伯恩 that 法勒 concluded that The Apprentice School was the right fit for him. I thought it was the coolest thing in the world to be able to build submarines 和 aircraft carriers.”

“费什伯恩 taught me a lot 和 I grew up a lot quicker as far as developing leadership skills go. There are a lot of leadership opportunities at The Apprentice School 和 discipline is held up to a very high st和ard.

You’re not going to be blindsided by anything because your supervisors will give you a heads up about anything that is going on.”

For 法勒, there was one more, very important similarity between life at FMS 和 life at The Yard. 泰勒·艾伦, FMS 2017届毕业生, 和 fellow Caisson’s wrestler had just completed his first year at Apprentice School when 法勒 was accepted to the program. I came down a week before my start date so he could show me around 和 show me where I needed to report.”

Orientation week at The Apprentice School is a busy mix of academic evaluations 和 Human 资源 in-processing. 那一天, people from all around The Apprentice School 和 The Yard give you a rundown of everything that’s going to happen 和 what you will be required to do.”

完成课堂要求后, apprentices spend their remaining time in the program learning to master their individual trades in a h和s-on environment.

此时,团队主管向每个人简要介绍要完成的任务, 分发任何机械图纸, equipment lists 和 pairs up each apprentice with a “mate” who will be their partner for the day.

不像大多数即将从本科毕业的21岁年轻人, 法勒 is established 和 confident in his career 和 enjoys the security of knowing he has realistic 和 lucrative options.

尽管学徒制在全国范围内急剧上升, 法勒 knows that many who could benefit greatly from the experience are hampered by the lingering misconceptions about the value of an apprenticeship versus a four-year degree.

There just is not enough coverage about apprenticeships 和 I feel like people should keep their options open.”
